It all began with three women, a lot of faith and one dream: to make some of the best-tasting cakes in Dar and build a game-changing business with both the products and the customer service experience to go with it. There was just one problem – none of us were professional bakers, and we didn’t have a clue where to start when it came to cake decorating. We decided to do it anyway. What started as an idea turned into business strategy meetings, meetings turned into experimenting with different recipes, and those experiments led to baking and selling our very first cake. With each of us employed at the time, we started taking orders from family and colleagues at work, baking them at home and doing the best we could to make them look presentable before delivering them to our customers.
We’ll be honest, the cakes were not pretty, but we had one thing going for us – they were delicious. Little by little, our vision started to come to life. Our best-selling flavors were carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and almonds, and chocolate fudge cake with chocolate frosting. Next thing we knew, we went from one order a week to several orders a day, working in our offices by day and baking and decorating in the evenings and into the wee hours of the morning.
Late night baking became the norm. Eventually, it became clear that we were building something special, and that we may have an actual business on our hands, so we closed the doors on our home-baking and in 2016, we opened our very first shop in Namanga, Dar es salaam, and the rest – as they say – is history.
